BALLOONS FOR A COUP

Picture
TMPO - THE MOBILE PHONE ORCHESTRA

Shaw’s participatory performances are inspired by the subversive and anarchic childhood games played in the classroom to undermine and agitate authority. Classroom pranks such as humming and tapping games were in their very essence subversive acts of resistance and control, sonically occupying space and appropriating authority through one collective action. In his participatory works: Balloons For A Coup, TMPO and The Wave, Shaw reclaims and reimagines these defiant acts, using them as tools to investigate our relationship to language, communication and ritual, and as a vehicle to explore how participatory culture can stimulate participatory politics.
